Once upon a time on a Sunday
script: Péter Kalmár
2023 – …
My script is a tribute to 120 years of Hungarian film history; on the other hand, the most significant historical periods of the last century, at the same time evokes the language of film history to this day - the world's most famous Hungarian brand, Gloomy Sunday, Gloomy Sunday.
The most memorable moments of the last 120 years; five stories, in the shadow of the infamous suicide song. five moods and genres; and five strikingly different film styles in which these tales come to life. Silent film, farce, socio-real, new wave, and today's postmodern virtual reality.
The menu: a murder, a morbid game with death, a doomed love story, a political murder disguised as suicide, and finally a failed suicide attempt.
Our heroes just want to live, but they don't always succeed.
"One succeeds, the other fails" - but that's another song.
In the screenplay, they are not presented in chronological order these stories and film styles, but through the key character and we follow the legend of "Sad Sunday", where they appear in a kind of non-linear vision in the timelines these ages and tales; with a flux between ages-styles-stories-times.
A film style play? Also. And a great journey through time, in which I tell of this silly little kitsch, this world-famous suicide song its origins, its legend, its impact and its deactivation. The song in whose light few have bathed, but many more have disappeared into the darkness, the song that was once adored, and long feared and forbidden. The song that has been has been reworked every year by new artists all over the world.
